Samdup Gyatso, the 28-year-old man who was arrested after he staged a lone protest in front of the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa on May 1 has been found jailed at the city’s Drapchi prison by his younger brother.
The brother, Tenpa Dhargyal, located Samdup at the prison, meant for sentenced detainees, on Jun 13. He has said his brother had been tortured in prison and was in poor health on account of it. It was not stated, however, whether he had been tried and if so what his prison term was.

During the May 1 protest he was reported to have demanded “proper allocation and delivery of earthquake relief materials and funds received from international donors to the much needed nomadic communities in Kyegudo”.

Dharamsala-based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said May 3 that seven policemen pounced on Samdup and took him away.

Samdup was born in a nomad family in Haiyan (Tibetan: Hiyon or Dashi) County in Tsojang (Chinese: Haibei) Prefecture of Qinghai Province. He was earlier a monk at the local Jabdrung Gartok Monastery. He came to India in Nov’07 and studied for a year at Sherab Gatsel Lobling school, meant for adult new refugees from Tibet, near Dharamsala.

While returning to Tibet in Mar’08, he was arrested at Dram (Chinese: Zhangmu) border post near Nepal . He spent a month at the Shigatse police detention centre and another six months at Drapchi Prison in Lhasa. He returned home upon release from prison in Oct’08.
