Reporters Without Borders is disturbed by the government’s announced intention to compile a blacklist of journalists who break the rules of their profession.
A government news agency quotes Li Dongdong, a deputy chief of the General Administration of Press and Publication, as saying a database is to be compiled of journalists who engage in “unhealthy professional conduct.” Explaining that the authorities need to “resolutely halt fake news,” Li said: “People entered into the transgressor list will be excluded from engaging in news reporting and editing work.”

Li Datong, a former newspaper editor who was sidelined for objecting to censorship, told Reuters: “A database for this kind of thing would be a new thing. This fighting fake news is a cloak. You can call all sorts of news fake.”
