Shanghai police have detained an outspoken activist after she protested outside a city government meeting about forced evictions, human rights groups said Wednesday.

Mao Hengfeng, 47, was among 100 people who demonstrated outside the annual Shanghai Municipal Congress meeting on Monday, Amnesty international said in a statement.

The group Human Rights in China also issued a separate statement about Mao’s detention.

Mao was detained along with several other protesters, including her daughter, Amnesty said. The other protesters were released at midnight, but Mao was then transferred to a different police station.

Police later told Mao’s family that she would be detained for seven days for “disturbing public order”, both statements said.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

After visiting the activist on Tuesday, Mao’s family alleged she had been beaten and denied food, the statements said.

Mao has repeatedly run into trouble with authorities since the late 1980s, when she resisted pressure to have an abortion and broke Chinese law by giving birth to a second child.

She was dismissed from her job at a soap factory after the birth and tried unsuccessfully to get the courts to uphold her right to work.

Her attempts to petition the government have resulted in multiple detentions, forced eviction and being admitted to a psychiatric hospital three times — a tactic often used to silence dissidents.

Neither statement gave details about whether Monday’s demonstration focused on specific eviction cases.

She was released in November after serving a two-and-a-half year sentence for “intentionally damaging property,” Amnesty said.

In 2004, she was sentenced to one-and-a-half years of re-education through labour — an administrative procedure that bypasses the courts.
