Hundreds of graduates from the Institute of Tibetan Traditional Medicine in Tibet’s capital Lhasa have staged a protest Sep 2 in front of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) government headquarters, demanding increase in the number of jobs available to them. Some of them were reported to be carrying banners demanding an increase in jobs available to them over this year’s quota of just 60. The number of graduates from the institute this year alone was reported to be 256.School officials were said to have spoken with the protesters. But they could only agree to allow the Tibetans to take the examination meant for graduates of the modern medicine school, which would require them to be proficient in Chinese. Most of the students at the Institute were said to be Tibetans from western and central Tibetan areas, such as Nagchu, Lhoka, Shigatse, and Lhasa. There was a brief surge in the hiring of traditional Tibetan medicine graduates last year when a Chinese official toured remote areas of TAR and identified an “urgent need” for additional practitioners, the report said. At most of the large medical facilities in Tibet at the prefectural level, there are reported to be just two or three traditional Tibetan medicine doctors working in small clinics. While there has been no report of arrests, many Tibetan students who sent text messages by cell phone among themselves were reported to have been detained, with many of them having disappeared.
