Nepal deployed hundreds of security forces on the streets of its capital Kathmandu to prevent ‘anti-China demonstration’ by Tibetans on their Democracy Day of Sep 2, reported Himalayan Times online (Nepal) Sep 2. It cited Deputy Superintendent of Police Pradhumna Kumar Karki, Kathmandu Operation In-charge, as saying 600 police personnel had been mobilised in areas with high concentration of Tibetan exiles to stop them from coming out of their respective places.Tibetans generally do not stage demonstrations on this day and none was held in Kathmandu. Nepal obviously went out of its way to take the security measure for fear of offending a petulant China.

“Police did not have to use force anywhere as they observed the day in monasteries,” the report quoted Karki as saying, adding no arrest was made on the day.

The report added that Tibetan exiles performed special prayers at the Bouddha stupa to celebrate the day and to remember their fight for democracy in Tibet against Chinese rule.
